What is stress?
Throughout our lives we all face different challenges and obstacles, and sometimes it can feel as though the pressure is too much to handle. This can leave us feeling overwhelmed and or unsure how we are going to meet the pressures and demands placed on us – this feeling is stress.
In small doses, feeling stressed can be a good thin. The feeling can give you the push you need to motivate you to do your best, helping you to stay focused and alert. A bit of stress is what keeps you on your toes during a presentation, or helps you to stay sharp during a competition.
However, when the going becomes too tough and life’s demands begin to exceed your belief in your ability to cope, you can become overloaded with feeling stressed – this is when feeling stressed can become a challenge or threat to both your physical and emotional well-being.
Signs of Stress Overload
If you are experiencing stress overload you may notice some of the following signs:
Anxiety or panic attacks
Feelings of being constantly pressured, hassled and hurried
Irritability and moodiness
Physical symptoms, such as stomach problems, headaches, chest pain
Allergic reactions, such as eczema or asthma
Insomnia, sleep problems
Drinking too much, smoking, over-eating, or doing drugs
Sadness or depression
We express our stress in different ways, some people become angry and act out their stress, taking their feelings out on others; some people internalise their feelings and ‘bottle’ it all up and this can develop into problems such as an eating disorder or substance abuse; some people can develop a chronic illness and, those who have a chronic illness already, could find that the symptoms of their illness flare up when they feel stressed.
Prolonged stress depletes your immune system. Your immune system is your only line of defence against illness and disease. Therefore prolonged periods of stress can make you more susceptible to illnesses and disease – anyone who has an illness will likely tell you that, prior to diagnosis, they were going through a prolonged period of feeling very stressed or anxious and/or unhappy.
Many problems such as over-eating, smoking, drinking and drug abuse are linked to feelings of stress or anxiety or unhappiness….food, cigarettes, drink and drugs are used as an escape, as a comfort, or as a temporary way of “switching off” – but they do not address the underlying problems.
I can help you to address underlying reasons behind stress. Together we can resolve all of your stressed feelings that makes the present day-to-day challenges seem so difficult to deal with.
Remember, feeling stressed can cause problems in marriages and relationships. The feelings can cause problems in the workplace or at home with your family; the changes in the body from feeling stressed can also cause physical and mental illness and disease and can eventually send you to an early grave. So if any of what you have just read applies to you then booking an appointment with me just might be the smartest thing you could do for you!
