What is a phobia?
A phobia is ‘the symbolic external representation of our internal anxiety’ – basically you are blaming something for making you feel the way you do. Most of us have one or two ‘fears’, or something, or a situation that we feel a little uncomfortable about.
However, it’s when your emotional reaction is so severe and intense about the situation or event or thing, to the point where you begin to sweat, or feel sick, or start blushing, or start shaking or begin to panic and perhaps even experience a panic attack, this is when you then begin to believe that you have a phobia.
How does a phobia develop?
Whenever we are in a situation where we experience an intense negative emotional reaction, we will natural want to avoid those feelings/emotions in the future. Now, if you believe that your intense emotional reaction was caused by the situation, or an ‘it’, then you are understandably going to avoid similar situations in the future.
Then more you avoid the situation, the more you reinforce the belief that your feelings happened to you. This only adds to the fear of the situation, and eventually your mind will create a phobia as a sort of reminder for you not to get into that situation again – this explanation of how a phobia is created may make sense…however, IT’S WRONG!
Nearly all phobias are not even related to the actual cause of the anxiety, they are only symbolic of it!
Now, if you found that last sentence a little hard to believe, and like most people you believe in the theory that if you have a phobia about dogs, then you must have been bitten by a dog once (which seems logical). However, this theory fails to explain why there are 12 million people in the U.K. with a fear of flying (aviatophobia). When there is no way that there’s 12 million people been close to death in a plane and lived to tell the tale and develop a phobia of flying!
The 12 million aviaphobics do not have a fear of flying per se. Their actual fear is of being in a situation where they feel out of control…which their brain has symbolically projected on to flying.
Most other therapies either try to get around the phobia, or even try to teach the person coping techniques. These types of therapies will not change the root cause of your anxieties. What I offer you will, and once this is done your phobia will cease to exist because what was driving it will no longer be there.
One of the most debilitating phobias I help resolve is Emetophobia, which is a fear of being sick, and its associated fears; gagging, seeing others being sick, choking on food, pregnancy (due to possibility of morning sickness), anything sick related.
Emetophobia is the 6th most common phobia in the UK and people with this also commonly have other phobias such as Agoraphobia, Claustrophobia, Microphobia (fear of germs), Phagophobia (fear of eating), Pnigophobia (fear of gagging and choking), to name a few.
