The outdated practice of trying to treat the ‘symptoms’ of poor mental health whilst not addressing the causes is obviously failing.
Over the years, more and more people are being given a diagnosis and medicated, and yet mental health is in decline and suicide rates are on the rise – it’s time we faced up to the FACT that the current mental health model is seriously flawed!
Mental health is about the only thing in our lives where we wait for it to break down before we attempt to fix it. For example, do we wait for our teeth to start rotting before we do something about it? No, we are taught to clean them regularly.
So, why do we wait till we are gripped by anxiety, panic or depression before we do something about it? This is mainly because till now, mental health has been made out to be something really complicated, and very unpredictable – however, it isn’t!
There is a huge body of research that proves that mental health is very something very predictable. For example, if you have friends who suffer with depression, if you listen to them, you will notice that they will share certain beliefs and thinking habits. The same applies to anyone with a phobia, regardless of their phobia, they will share specific unhelpful thinking habits and perspectives, albeit about different things, but still the same way of looking at things.
Psychological research shows that people who thrive and flourish in life don’t share the same beliefs and thinking habits as people who aren’t. Now, here’s the best bit…we aren’t born with beliefs or thinking habits. We learned them, which means that the can be unlearned!
As a Thrive Programme consultant I pass on the very same knowledge, skills and resources of the people who are thriving and flourishing regardless of whatever life has or will put before them.
